Hi there My dad bought my mum a new laptop for Christmas (not knowing it was a Linux instead of windows). We are all used to using windows and I am finding it very difficult to work with the linux system. My mum is trying to use her ipod on her new laptop. However you cannot install itunes on a linux system. I have looked into other compatible programs but I am struggling to understand what any of the websites are talking about. Does anyone know of a quick and easy (step by step please) way to download software that is compatible with itunes please? Also is it possible to get MSN messenger on linux?

There are a number of ipod compatible, Linux based players out there that will work. In order to give you some specific examples though, it would help if you told us what distro you have installed on your laptop. I would suggest you go to http://sourceforge.net/ and look there and also Google, "ipod compatible players for [your Linux distro]" you'll get back quite a few choice to check out.

If it ain't broke, you aren't trying hard enough.

She has an Acer aspire one series. Model number: ZG5. I have gone onto the website you advised me of earlier and tried to download atunes. However on the last step all I seem to get is a list of links. I don't know what types of files Linux will open. I think I have established that exe files wont work. Which files will work?
I have just downloaded pidgin and when I select open I just get a window with text in it.
What did you download? If you have a choice, you should download RPM packages, which have a ".rpm" extension on the filename. With these, there should be an "Install" option when you right click them. The easier way to do all of this, in my opinion, is to open the Terminal, and enter the following:
sudo yum install pidgin
It will prompt you for a password and then install everything. There is probably also a graphical package manager that is easy to use to get pidgin, but I'm not familiar with Linpus Lite. As far as the iPod manager goes, I would recommend gtkPod. You can install it by opening the Terminal and entering this:
sudo yum install gtkpod
Let us know if these don't work for you!

Well, I don't know where the applications get hidden in the menus (if they do at all), but you can certainly run gtkpod by entering
gtkpod
in the terminal. (The same goes for pidgin when you get it installed.) As far as your pidgin installation goes, I think you either tried to install gtkpod a second time or you pasted the wrong output, as it shows a gtkpod installation.

As far as the pidgin goes I just tried again and I got: [user@localhost Documents]$ sudo yum install pidgin Setting up Install Process Parsing package install arguments Resolving Dependencies --> Running transaction check ---> Package pidgin.i386 0:2.2.2-1.fc8 set to be updated --> Processing Dependency: libpurple = 2.2.2-1.fc8 for package: pidgin --> Finished Dependency Resolution Error: Missing Dependency: libpurple = 2.2.2-1.fc8 is needed by package pidgin [user@localhost Documents]$

New programs probably won't show up as desktop launchers, but they should be in the desktop menu. Step three of the guide I linked to above enables the right click desktop menu. Do the programs not show up there? Here is a guide to customizing the GUI: http://www.reghardware.co.uk/2008/12/04/acer_aspire_one_ui_fiddling/print.html That should help if you want to add a launcher to the desktop.

Still not having any luck with downloading pidgin. Is there another alternative at all? Also now I have changed the root password if I open a terminal and type yum install pidgin or whatever it is it says you must be root or something, how do I solve that?
