Have you contacted the box manufacturer? If their default OS is not Linux, then what is the CPU architecture of the box? Sometimes real fast is almost as good as real time. Remember, Google is your friend!

What's the problem? You should be able to install Ubuntu on just about any Intel PC. What you are saying is that you have this set-top box that connects to a PC via a serial IR connection? I assume that the computer that you are using has a serial IR port. Did you check out this link? http://www.lirc.org/ It seems that they have support for the following Topfield devices: PVR 5000 TF4000Fi TF4000PVR I hope this helps.
