Subject: I'm stupid about card reader
Help! I recently installed a downloaded version of Ubuntu's Linux. And, overall I love the system, it never (knock on wood) fails! But, because I'm not the pro computer user, I'm having a problem getting the OS to read any card I put into my SanDisk ImageMate 6 in 1 reader. I've searched the net trying to find an installable driver, but all I can find is info on how to build a driver. Duh, what??? I see the data, but it's nothing I know what to do with. So my overall question is this...... Does any one know of or have a written driver for my reader?? Please. I apologize for my ignorance.

Subject: I'm stupid about card reader
I have similar issues with card readers, presuming it is a USB device. I have found that Linux generally will not mount an SD/CF card in these readers like it will a USB thumb drive - I have to manually mount the device. The system recognizes it and will put an entry in /dev, such as /dev/sdj1. You need to create a mount point, and then mount the device directly and you can then have access to it. If you are using SD cards, then it is easier to use a USB SD reader that looks like a thumb drive. Connect it directly into the USB port and Linux will automount it for you just fine. That's what I do most of the time - it's easier and less error-prone. Such USB/SD thumb drive carriers cost from $5 to $10 USD. I have a bunch since I use SD cards to hold the MP3s that I play in my car stereo. It's a lot more convenient to carry around a bunch of SD cards in the car than a basket full of CDs. :-)
Sometimes real fast is almost as good as real time.
