Subject: Jumpdrive installation?
I just downloaded the Puppy Linux 4.1.2 software from their site: http://www.puppylinux.org/downloads I'm not sure where to go from here, though. Is it possible to save it to a jumpdrive? The disk holds about 4 gigs worth of memory and the file size is only 94.3mb's. I want to know if it is possible to save it on to the jumpdrive, and if it is do i have to use some other software to change the file or whatever? Can you even dualboot a Linux OS from a jumpdrive, or do you HAVE to use a CD-ROM?

People say that if you play Microsoft programs backwards, you hear satanic things, but thats nothing. If you run them forwards, then they install Windows!

You will need to burn a puppy image to a cd first before you can install it to usb. Instructions below. http://www.pendrivelinux.com/puppy-linux-on-usb/

You can also use Unetbootin (http://sourceforge.net/projects/unetbootin/) and create a jumpdrive installation of Puppy. There is a Windows .exe version for that. It will even download the distribution image for you!

Rocky, if i do the installation from the site you were talking about: http://www.pendrivelinux.com/puppy-linux-on-usb/ would it still be a dualboot? Or would I be running the Puppy OS right of of the flash drive and still have my Windows XP on my desktop?

The operating system Puppy would be running off your jumpdrive. Nothing will Happen to your XP if you follow the install procedures to the Letter. When booting up from Pen Drive You will not be able to boot up Windows. When in Windows you will not be able to boot up Puppy On Pendrive. Puppy is a operating system independant of Windows and unless you are familiar with VM ware, and Virtual Machines. Which I gather you are not, according to your questions. Just go with the USB drive Puppy for now. Learn to crawl before you can run. Don't be afeared that a Pendrive Puppy Linux install will bork your Windows XP. Just don't try to boot up the pen drive while in Windows XP and you'll be fine. Just after making bootable Puppy USB just go into bios, select usb hardrive as first boot device, and you are off to the Races with Puppy Linux. Good Luck with your hunt with the dog.

O.K. thanks. You are a big help but i have a couple more questions: How exactly do you burn the ISO to the C.D. using Imageburner? ("1. Download Puppy linux ISO and burn the ISO to CD") And do you have to change you BIOS to start it from the C.D.? ("2. Start your computer via the Puppy CD") If you could answer those last two you will have been a HUGE help to me during my transition from Windows to Linux! Thank you all!

check website http://www.imgburn.com/index.php?act=screenshots for the second question, it depends on how old is your computer and its brand. Some you can hit the F10 or F9 or some other key to bring up the boot order. From there choose to boot from CD. This option you don't have to change in the BIOS. However, if you have an old computer, you have to change the boot order in the BIOS. Usually hit the Delete or F2 key at the BIOS/POST screen to go to BIOS setup screen.
