I'm XP savvy but very very new to linux, installed Ubuntu and under duress of a buddy switched to Kubuntu 8.10 today. PROBLEM 1, on the 1st boot up (I have it on its own HD, no partition) it had a line that said &quot;rejecting I/O to dead device&quot; and a bunch of lines that says &quot;usb 5-2 device description read/64, error -110&quot; and &quot;device not accepting address 6 and 7 error 110&quot;. After about 3 minutes of this it finally boots and goes to the desktop. PROBLEM 2, in the toolbar in the bottom right corner there is a globe that is black and white, I click on it (wlan 0 disconnected) and it shows my wireless connection (2WIRE153) but it says its not connected. I clicked on it and clicked &quot;connect and save&quot; but I still have no connection. PROBLEM 3, I copied my MP3's from XP Pro to Kubuntu and AmaroK won't play them, it says that I need to install libxine1-ffmpeg, how do I do that and where is it? Is it on the CD? How do I install it? I know how to open Konsole but what should I type in as I am not code savvy. and PROBLEM 4 how do I stop it from asking me for a password to cut the computer off?

4 gig memory
D-Link DWA-552 wireless PCI card

I use audio and video off the board

Is your wireless secure with WEP or WPA? if so you need to type in the security key. I think if you have the internet connection the package needed for MP3 will be downloaded automagically :) I haven't used the lates *ubuntu so I don't know. I don't have that kind of password prompting shutdown in 8.04 </div>

It sounds like you are having some sort of hardware problem related to the computer's USB ports. Do you have something plugged into one of the USB ports? If so, perhaps that is causing some sort of interference with the Kubuntu installation.

As for the network problem, it sounds like it sees the wireless card, but it won't connect if you have WEP or WPA enabled on the access point (router). Yomo's reply above mentions this.

Finally, you REALLY didn't need to do a full Kubumtu installation when you already had Ubuntu installed. You could have much more easily (and safely) installed KDE on the system using the package manager to download and install it. Presuming you had the wireless and other stuff running OK before you installed Kubuntu, you might want to reinstall what worked before and try this approach. Just a suggestion as a final resort if you cannot resolve your connection and USB problems otherwise.<p class="hiddensignature">

I think if you have the internet connection the package needed for MP3 will be downloaded automagically :) I haven't used the lates *ubuntu so I don't know. I don't have that kind of password prompting shutdown in 8.04
My 2WIRE is WEP and I know what the # is by heart (which is kinda sad!). I can't find a place to put it and the system doesn't ask for it. Where should I be looking? </div>

Just a suggestion as a final resort if you cannot resolve your connection and USB problems otherwise.
Nothing plugged into USB ports. It's WEP and I know the number, but where does it go? Didn't have internet connection under Ubuntu either, works in XP, but not in Ubu or Kubu but at least Kubu &quot;see's&quot; the 2WIRE, I just cant connect and I don't know why. Being totally green to this OS probably has something to do with it also...need,,, help,,,fading,,,fast... </div>
