Subject: What software to download for my need?
I have a computer run with Windows XP operating system without useful software. I would like to know which software package from Linux I should download to run all Microsoft office files (word, excel, etc) from my job. Any helps is greatly appreciated. Thank you.

http://www.openoffice.org/ Openoffice should be able to handle all of your ms office files. Be aware they are not always 100% compatible. http://www.fanaticattack.com/2008/switching-office-suites-from-microsoft-office-to-openofficeorg.html

Also, keep in mind that OpenOffice doesn't currently support Office2007 native file formats. Most businesses, however are still using the older file formats, so you should be ok.

OO.o 3.0 does partially support the new OOXML formats (.docx, .xlsx, .pptx) for MS Office 2007. You can open and edit the file but you can't save in that format. but you can save in the older MS Office formats which 2007 can read.

The go-oo OpenOffice distribution has improved the OOXML file handling capabilities of OOo. You might try that one. I have installed it on my CentOS 5.2 system and find it handles all MS Office file formats much better than the standard distribution. Get it at www.go-oo.org.
