Subject: soulseek (or similar) on linux
Hi, my sister just got an acer aspire one with linux os on it.
I have never used linux and neither has she and she asked me to put soulseek on it for her to download music.
I looked into it last night and found programs like nicotine ans psysoulseek but as i have only ever used windows, i dont have a clue what to do with all of the different .tar files that you have to install.
I was at it for nearly 3 hours last night downloading this and that and then extracting the files from each but nothing happened.
Can anyone please help???
I also installed WINE as i thought it would let me install the soulseek.exe as a normal windows os would .
It installed and opened but i couldn't connect and nothing seemed to work.
Is there maybe an alternative to soulseek that she can use?
She had limewire previously but i warned her off it due to the amount of viruses etc on there.

To access soulseek network using linux, you can use Nicotine-plus or Museek.

You were trying to install these apps the hard way, if you just give us which linux distribution you are using, we will point you in the right direction, because there is easy and simple ways to install software on linux.

Open Terminal and type in
cat /etc/issue
and hit enter. Copy and paste readout in next post.

The distro is Linpus Lite. To do anything useful with it, you need to enable "advanced mode"; there is a guide here: http://www.aspireoneuser.com/2008/07/09/aspire-one-advance-linpus-mode-hack/. If you have any questions with that guide, just ask us.
Once that is enabled, you will have access to the Add/Remove Software program. Unlike in Windows, it actually will have tons of applications that you can install. I know that you can use Frostwire, which is like Limewire. You shouldn't have to worry about viruses, as they are all designed for Windows (but be careful if you copy files to a Windows machine). There should be other choices as well. If you find a particular application online that you want to install that isn't available in Add/Remove, we can help you install that too. (In particular, files that end with ".rpm" will be the easiest to install.)

I see you have a Fedora Core 8, to install linux into it you can either use the graphical software installation utility named "yast", or use the command line one named "yum".
In your case, to install Museek for example, go to the terminal and type "su -" to be in root mode, then "yum install museek"

It looks like Museek is still in the alpha phase, which means it's not even close to being a finished product yet. Rather than troubleshoot that, I would look for alternatives. Frostwire has an RPM available here: http://www.frostwire.com/?id=downloads. (Download the Red Hat/Fedora option.) You should be able to install that .rpm fairly easily.

Maybe you're using the wrong version of Java?
(FrostWire is tested against and works best with with Sun's JRE, Java 1.4+)
The version of Java in your PATH is:
java version "1.7.0"
IcedTea Runtime Environment (build 1.7.0-b21)
IcedTea Client VM (build 1.7.0-b21, mixed mode)
so what next?

It looks like it's having an error writing a "hashes" file in /usr/lib/frostwire. You shouldn't have to do this, but try using "sudo frostwire". If that fixes it, you can change the permissions on /usr/lib/frostwire so that it works on it's own.

Arggg... Linpus Lite is frustrating. What happened when you used sudo frostwire in the terminal? What other programs are available in Add/Remove for file sharing? Maybe Transmission? Vuze?
