Subject: My wired network has disappeared
Ok, so the title makes me sound really silly. I recently installed ubuntu on my Acer Aspire one, (I am really considering switching to XP if ubuntu keeps giving me this much trouble) It worked ok after alot of recommended setting changes i found from forums to enhance the life of the SSD. I recently connected it to the network and after setting up the proxy server everything seemed fine. After i run an update using the package manager i get a whole host of errors from the java install. So i restart and updates carry on fine. When i restart again my network card apparently disappears, it is no longer listed in any network manager, and the drivers have been completely removed. Is there a way to force ubuntu to check for 'new' hardware?

Hello unfoundbug, Could you open a terminal window and issue these commands, reporting the results: lspci lsmod [Modified by: cdrigby on January 31, 2009 11:25 AM]

Anyone know of a way to add the wired network to the computer again? Usually i hate bumping threads, but this is a really annoying issue now

Well after a check, ALL of my network interfaces are unable to be accessed. Tryed some other methods, (ifdown, ifconfig and ifup). The devices won't activate. Using lsHW shows the devices as disabled and i can't figure out how to enable them

It may be that they are not enabled in the BIOS, so while Ubuntu can see them, it cannot enable them.

Which version of Ubuntu did you install? I checked the AspireOne wiki page on the Ubuntu community docs site: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/AspireOne There is reference to a bug affecting kernel version 2.6.27-11 which seems to be Aspire One-specific. Details of the bug are here: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/313866 The problem appears to be in the kernel, and is not yet resolved. At this point, I would try a different distro. If you installed Intrepid Ibex (Ubuntu 8.10) you might try Hardy Heron (Ubuntu 8.04.1 LTS). The current version of the kernel in in Hardy Heron is 2.6.24-23. The other distro with which I am familiar is Arch Linux. The most recent kernel there is version 2.6.28.3-1. That distro also has a page specific to the Aspire One: http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Acer_Aspire_One Arch Linux installation and configuration is less user-friendly than Ubuntu. The plus side is that the resulting system is more streamlined. [Modified by: cdrigby on February 03, 2009 09:31 AM] [Modified by: cdrigby on February 03, 2009 09:32 AM]

Grub on CentOS keeps pointers to the past several kernel builds so if one breaks, you can easily boot in the previous one that worked. You can go into grub.conf and make that your preferred kernel as well, much as you did. In fact, I did that on my last kernel update since I haven't got around to building/linking my nVidia driver into the new kernel as yet. When I do, I'll change the default to the new one.

I had that problem. The atheros wifi disappeared from lspci and from any live usb linux. I solved by disconnecting the battery and the power cord, and then reconnect them. It seems that atheros wifi card has memory and keeps the memory stored state(disconnect, suspend) between reboots.

Indeed, what elante said. I found that if I turned off the wireless in Windows, Linux would think it was enabled, but it wouldn't work until I re-enabled it in Windows... Gah! Battery removal is probably faster! :-)
