Subject: changing linux distro? need suggestions
i am still currently using ubuntu 7.04... could not use the later versions because of some hardware incompatibility.... i am currently waiting and maybe 9.04 might solve problems but if it does not, could you please suggest a distro that is free, and has many installable applications as that of ubuntu? willing to shift to kde if needed... willing to install any distro no matter how technical... btw:i am only a cs student. and installing linux on a laptop... thanks

So, you've tried to install Ubuntu 8.10? I've heard of problems if you try to update on some systems, but a clean install works OK.

Sometimes real fast is almost as good as real time. Remember, Google is your friend!

you shoud try one of these : fedora opensuse mandriva pclinuxos if you realy want to learn something about linux and how to use linux (not only current distribution) try SLACKWARE maby ARCH LINUX (for advanced users, or if you would like to become one of them) i use ubuntu as my main OS but in a same time zenwalk is installed on my HDD and i am cosidering to use it as default

If you haven't tried some of the variants of Ubuntu, like Xubuntu or Linux Mint, you might find they offer different compatibility profiles. Two more approachable distros are SimplyMEPIS and Sabayon.

to rubberman, i think i've only tried as far as 8.04... maybe will try ubuntu again by 9.04.... to branislav i have slax on my flash, really impressed by its' portability... will give some thought whether or not to try slackware or arch as you said.... to rambo, will give some thought on your suggestions too... thanks to all, will now try to research about those flavors...
