You probably will not enjoy GNOME or KDE with only 240mb RAM. Ubuntu recommends 512mb as the minimum sys requirements. You might enjoy some XFCE. You could try Xubuntu, the XFCE Ubuntu spin, or try Crunchbang, Ubuntu with the openbox window manager. If you want much better performance, I would recommend something with LXDE. http://wiki.mandriva.com/en/2009.0_Tour#LXDE : http://wiki.lxde.org/en/Debian : http://wiki.lxde.org/en/Category:LXDE

I suggest you, if you gonna try Ubuntu, to install from an alternate cd, 'cause LiveCD needs at least 256 or more MB RAM. On 256 MB you can run even quiet good even KDE, but i don't think that Ubunut will be able to run on your hardware. I think the best for u would be to try Fluxbuntu. I use debian exclusively. Very clean, gnome is default desktop install gui. I only have 256mb on a 1.8 gig proc and have no problems with performance.

Hi, I started using linux 2years ago, I made a custom edition, let me tell you that it makes you forget about windows within days. Its so awesome. But the official ubuntu will be unable to satisfy a new user. So there is an edition which looks like windows(so its easy to switch from windows and learn). All the instructions are given in it. Download it, burn a DVD and boot from it. On the Desktop you will see the instructions. Follow the Installation Instructions, after you are done reboot and enable graphics by following the instructions. That is it you will be in the wonderland. Here is the torrent for it. http://www.mininova.org/get/2493250 Hope you know how to download a torrent..... :) Welcome to the world of linux

I missed 100% of the shots I didn't take!! Linux for both newbies and experts, based on Ubuntu 8.10. Get it from the following torrent - http://www.mininova.org/get/2493250. Reed is right, the limited RAM will limit your options for using a heavy distro. You might also want to have a look at damn small linux and puppy linux to see if you want to try them. Both these distros are made to run on older computers with limited memory.
