installing update

Subject: installing update
tried to install update "linux-image-2.6.24.23-generic [17.0 mb] Get message "error occurred E:var/cache/apt/archives/linux-image 2.6.24.23 generic_2.6.24.48_ i386.deb: unable to make backup link of'./boot/ vm linuz-2.6.24.23-generic before installing new version. I don't know what to do. Can someone please help? new at linux Thank you

I think we should start with what exactly you're trying to accomplish and what specifically you did before getting that error. Also, what distribution are you running?

running ubuntu 8.04 an icon on top of page says "updates available" I pressed on it and it downloaded several updates plus the error message. Thank you.

Hmm, I think you don't have enough space on the partition to backup the old kernel. Can you open a terminal and post the output of "df -h" (without quotes).

It's not a space issue. I'm not very familiar with it, but am I right that you've installed Ubuntu using Wubi on your Windows machine? Is your install on a FAT32 partition? It seems to be this bug: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/252175
