Best is a subjective term. It's true that Debian has been ported to a lot of different architectures, but for the vast majority of people using laptops, netbooks, and desktops, what matters are x86, x86_64, PPC, and ARM. PPC was the old powerpoint architecture used by Apple, but they have since switched to Intel, which is x86. ARM is probably up and coming and use spreads in netbooks. And what none of that speaks to is compatibility to other hardware, like video cards, wireless cards, printers, etc. Debian's potential to work with all of these hardware pieces is on par with any other of the main distros - most drivers for common hardware are built into the kernel and are therefore distro agnostic. Debian is very strict about only using free (as in speech) software, so will not work out of the box with, for example, a lot of wireless cards that require proprietary firmware or drivers; cards that might work in Ubuntu out of the box.
