since Unix is considered a commercial os, and linux is based on Unix, does that make redhat count as a Unix

Dexter, I used redhat since 1997 at this time was free. I think is not a unix. You can prove it because all commands are GNU and not UNIX.

Linux is not based on Unix. It is based on the Linux kernel and layered with GNU and other open source software (compilers, interpreters, X-Windows, tools, etc). The Linux kernel was developed by Linus Torvalds as a personal project about 20 years ago who wanted a personal Unix-like operating system to play with. He is still the principal maintainer of the Linux kernel (see www.kernel.org for more information). Unix was originally developed at AT&T Bell Laps by Ken Thompson and Dennis Ritchie who wanted a Multics-like operating system that would run on their PDP (DEC) computers. Today, there are a number of major Unix implementations (HP-UX, Tru64 Unix, Solaris, and AIX), but more and more the big-iron most of these systems run on are being loaded with Linux now that it has real 64-bit capabilities. Then there are the Unix-derived systems such as BSD (open source) and OSX (Apple Mac). So, Red Hat is NOT Unix, but a Unix-like operating system.

Sometimes real fast is almost as good as real time. Remember, Google is your friend!
