Subject: Need advice! Best linux distro for hosting CGI or PHP-Proxy!
Hi everybody! I have been using ubuntu for a while now, but I need to host a CGI, PHP, or other proxy server. I am pretty new to using linux in this way. I am a basic user. If anyone knows of a special distro or has an article or something that I could use to do this, that would be wonderful. P.S. I would like SSL if that is easily possible. Especially if the port can be customized from 443. Thanks everybody!

Pretty much any mainstream distribution will work well for this, including Ubuntu. Stay with what you know and see how it goes. If you want an enterprise class system for this that has to support a large community of users, then you might want to consider Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL or its clone version CentOS - that's what I use), or Suse Enterprise Linux. Ubuntu has a server-targeted version also, but I have not experience with it and the reviews I have read are mixed. Some people also get good mileage out of Fedora, OpenSuse, Gentoo, or Mepis for these sort of tasks. In any case, as I said, just about any current distribution will handle your stated needs quite easily.

Sometimes real fast is almost as good as real time. Remember, Google is your friend!

just in case you still need another reference, PHP and CGI are practically independent whatever distro you will use. I have not yet explored other distro but I have seen PHP work in Suse and currently, I am exploring Ubuntu with PHP. So far, I do not find anything unusual with the "working relationship" of the two.
