There are viruses out there for Linux, but the fact that Linux does not run as admin by default means that a virus cannot run rampant system wide. You should be more worried about rootkits and trojans on linux machines. Windows, unless you add other users and set permissions correctly, which the average user does not know how to do, will run as admin allowing any type or program full access system wide.

first of all, probably 99% of all viruses are made for windows (that really is enough to make you want to move to linux). second of all, a user on windows will have access to everything on the system, even crucial parts of it. however, if a virus wants to do that on linux, they have to execute commands that make them root and then do stuff. so, unless you have no idea what's a virus and whats not. viruses can't hurt you in linux.

As Mike said. Linux systems can be compromised, but to do any real damage they need root access. Normally, users have separate, non-root accounts on Linux and Unix machines, so any malware they get infected with will only affect their files and programs, not the system as a whole. There are virus scanners available for Linux, and some in fact are the kernel of many enterprise class anti-virus appliances. One such as ClamAV, which is fully open source and GPL'd.

I am also new here, I think viruses are design not for Linux that the reason why it is safe to use Linux. But I don't like their environment. I suggest to improve it. [Modified by: aldrinmirambel on April 21, 2009 12:00 PM]

No. Linux is not more secure simply because viruses are not designed for it. Viruses are not designed for Linux both because of it's smaller market share compared to Windows (hence it is a less profitable target), and because, as noted above, it's Unix-oriented architecture makes it significantly more difficult for a virus to infiltrate the OS. What isn't there to like about that?

I appreciate the concern which is been rose. The things need to be sorted out because it’s not about the individual but it can be with everyone. Mayes Skin Care Products
