Subject: New to the whole linux thang.
Just got a new laptop, running, horror of horrors, Vista Basic, with AMD Turion X2 processor, 2.1GHz, 1MB cache, 3GB DDR2 memory, 250GB hard disk. Was planning on getting rid of vista ASAP, but was wondering which distro to use. A mate of mine recommended gNewSense, but I'm not fully sure, honestly not got much of a clue. Any advice would be appreciated.

Gnewsense is a distribution committed to running only free (as in speech) software, and does not make it easy to install non-free stuff. There are a number of drivers for things like wireless and graphics cards that are not completely free, and will not work under gnewsense, so I don't recommend it. Most distros do not include certain non-free software, either because they legally can't, or because they choose not to, (because we should be supporting free software over proprietary), but do make it easy to download and install it. I suggest trying the new Ubuntu 9.04. The final release is out in a couple days. And read this first: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SwitchingToUbuntu/FromWindows

Let me tell you that Linux makes you forget about windows within days. Its so awesome. But the official distributions will be unable to satisfy a new user. So there is an edition which looks like windows(so its easy to switch from windows and learn). All the instructions are given in it. Download it, burn a DVD and boot from it. On the Desktop you will see the instructions. Follow the Installation Instructions, after you are done reboot and enable graphics by following the instructions. That is it you will be in the wonderland. Here is the torrent for it. http://www.mininova.org/get/2493250 Hope you know how to download a torrent..... :) Welcome to the world of linux. And your configuration is great and is far beyond the requirements......

I missed 100% of the shots I didn't take!! Linux for both newbies and experts, based on Ubuntu 8.10. Get it from the following torrent - http://www.mininova.org/get/2493250. I've said it before and I'll say it again, no offense to Gavesh, but I would be wary of an unknown distribution from an unknown source. Stick with the major distros at first, later, when you're more comfortable, you can play with obscure or fringe distributions if you like. [Modified by: Reed on April 21, 2009 07:41 AM]

@Gavesh: Do you have a website detailing your modified Ubuntu? I noticed the download was nearly 2 GB, so you've obviously added a lot of packages. Do you have a package list? Configuration changes?
