Subject: need some advice
Hey guys,
I'm somewhat new to Linux, or in other words, I've played with linux a bit on some of the computers at the college here and have a pretty decent understanding of the OS but I'm by no means an expert on the various flavors of linux. I've mostly played with Fedora Core 9 + Core 10.
Anyways, what I need advice on is what flavor of linux I should put in an old box I picked up running an Asus A7V8X-X Motherboard, 1 Gig of RAM, and an AMD Athlon XP 2200+ Processor (1.8 Ghz if memory serves).
I mostly plan on using this box as a learning tool for my future escapades with linux.
Thanks

With that amount of RAM nearly everything should run...as I have said it is probably best to try different LiveCDs first. A list of LiveCDs is at http://www.livecdlist.com/ . A LiveCD will boot and run from the CD-Rom and leave the Hard Drive totally untouched - as though it had never been there. Alternatively try a USB stick version - as at http://www.pendrivelinux.com/

Yeah, that box is pretty much ok for any distro. You may try Crunchbang, Zenwalk, Dreamlinux...have a look at distrowatch.com. Even the latest ubuntu (I've not tried it to see if it improved performance, but ubuntu, while very friendly, is bloaty).
