Subject: switching from cpu intensive usage to ram intensive usage
i have 3 computers (1 ubuntu and 2 windows (1 died :P)) and i noticed that some sites run faster on windows than on my computer. however they both have system monitors and what i notice is that the cpu bar goes up and the ram bar barely moves and nothing appears in the swap bar. before i learned how to use linux and proper installation i installed ubuntu through its gui installation program and when i look in my root directory i dont see the /swap so i suspect that the problem may be that i dont have a swap so my computer doesnt run the way it should

If nothing happens to your swap bar then it seems its not a RAM problem. Also the swap usually is in a separate partition. It looks like you have a weak CPU there, right? Maybe weaker than your Windows pc. That affects the video performance. Also how much video RAM you have.(also the video driver and the browser may affect but if you have a weak pc the problem may be the CPU speed and low video RAM).

Also if you run Firefox do install Adblock Plus (go to Tools>Addons>Search Addons) and NoScript (this gives you some work enabling sites but speed up your navigation well). Seamonkey browser should be faster than the default FF (and the addons are the same) and Opera (with 'fanboy's adblock list - google it) is also faster (but I haven't tried with YouTube yet).
