I have created my own spin(not to be called distribution) of Ubuntu. 90% of the credit goes to this community. You might ask what is special in it?? Its here http://gaveshedition.wordpress.com. Now my simple question is how to popularise it??<p class="hiddensignature">
I missed 100% of the shots I didn't take!!
Linux for both newbies and experts, based on Ubuntu 8.10. Get it from the following torrent - http://www.mininova.org/get/2493250. To know what is so special about this edition visit http://gaveshedition.wordpress.com/2009/04/22/whats-new-in-gavesh-edition-version-11/</p>

I think the first step is to explain in greater detail on your blog what makes your respin different and unique, and why someone would want to use it over regular ubuntu. I still can't tell if all it is, is Ubuntu with a bunch of extra packages installed, which I could do easily enough myself. To get an idea of what makes a good respin, look at Crunchbang Linux. It's just Ubuntu with Openbox instead of GNOME, but they care they took with configuration and default options makes it really stand out. </div>

Well, I think it's nice of you having done that. It eases a lot for the beginners. I had seen your other post but couldn't find anywhere what was included. With Jaunty facing some problems with quite a few hardware this could be useful also. If possible, give a description at the mininova torrent page too so when people are directed to there they may know what it's all about. </div>

@Reed - I , for one, fell in love with Crunchbang too when first tried it, mainly because the machine I was using had a borderline (better say, below borderline) performance with Intrepid. But Gavesh's aim to make it even easier for a first time Linux user is just the opposite direction since Crunchbang requires some familiarity beforehand. </div>

I don't mean to discourage anyone from doing their own thing and trying to give back to the community. I just want to give honest feedback about where I see potential barriers to widespread adoption. The question I have to ask is, would I recommend this respin to someone over plain Ubuntu, or Linux Mint, or any of the other distros out there? So far, I don't have enough information based on Gavesh's website to feel comfortable doing that. My impression is that it's Ubuntu with a ton of extra packages installed. Some of which I think are unnecessary, such as having k3b along with brasero. For people migrating to Linux, sometimes the amount of choice can be overwhelming, and the more compelling thing for them, is a tightly integrated desktop environment. So either GNOME, or KDE, with their native apps, working together, seems better, in my opinion, that a hodgepodge of the two, where things don't always quite look right, or work as expected. Agreed that Cruchbang isn't necessarily for newbies, but my point is that it is a distro without a lot of custom packages or fundamental differences from its parent, yet still successfully manages to offer something unique and useful. Or Linux Mint, which takes it a step further in separating itself with in house apps like mintInstall, or mintNanny, and its online one-click repo. </div>
