I don't know if this should be here or in the distributions forum, but I put it here cause I'll probably need help with other things, like installing etc. Before you start reading, know that I've never used Linux, I've never even seen a computer with Linux before, so please correct the wrongs I say :) And, my English might not always be the best, but I think you'll understand me anyway.

I have this old laptop which I haven't used for years, but I've become interested in Linux and thought about getting it for the laptop, and now I of course wonder what distribution would be the best for me.
As I said, the laptop is old, with a Mobile AMD Athlon XP 2400+ 796 MHz processor and only 192 MB RAM. Though I don't know much about processors, so that doesn't really tell me much, but hopefully there are others here who know more. The video card is one I've never heard of: VgaSave. I suppose it could be some laptop thing. There is one 18GB harddrive and one 9.75GB, not much room for anything then.

I will mostly want to use the computer for internet browsing, so I'd like the system to be able to handle a decent web browser, Opera for example, which I suppose most distributions could. I might also get into a bit web development, and, if it's possible I'd like to be able to use applications like Adobe Flash and Cinema 4D. Also, music and maybe movies I'll want to play, and some equivalence to Microsoft Word would be good as well.

So, is there anyone who could help me with this? I know I might be pretty limited by my computers performance, but the most important is that I get a web browser and that I'll be able to listen to music. Of course everything I want don't have to be included from start, but I want the possibility to get, for example, an application for playing music. I suppose a distribution which is easy for beginners to Linux to use would be good, since I don't really know much about programming and stuff, but I can always learn what I need to know.. So it's more important to me that I can do what I want on the computer without slowing it down too much, instead of getting a beginners friendly distribution.

This turned out to be a little long, thanks to you who read it all. I really need help with this, so if you've got some time over I'd really appreciate tips on Linux distributions that would fit me.

                        hey hey hey!

Right ok as you might know there are loads of different flavours of Linux, and it really is up to you on which you use. However not all Distributions are free, some you do need to pay for. I would recommend you try a free one to get used to it.
For the kinda use it will be getting any version will do. (You can always install your favorite web browser or mail client later anyway.)
Im using Redhat 9 and i love it but it needs to be brought.
Debian is a popular choice by many and you might want to try it. Remember if you download a version of linux that you will need to burn it to cd/dvd afterwards.

www.debian.org is a starting point though, ive never used it so im not recommending it but with soooo much choice you have to start somewhere.

Thanks for reading

With the machine you've got, I won't recommend any of the modern Linux distributions. What you can try are Damn Small Linux and Puppy Linux. These two are ideal for old machines and these are very workable and amazing distros. We've reviewed them in the past so you can search Linux.com articles for our reviews.

Aplinesatan, RedHat 9 is very old. It's ancient. Is there any special reason (old hardware) that you are using it?

I was thinking about using it to start my LFS but have decided its way too old.
What would you suggest to use as a base os that can be used runing parallel on os x???

P.s OS X is build on unix so why does eveyone hate it??? lol

I don't! I love it! You can use just about any of the modern Linux distros like Fedora, Ubuntu, Mandriva, OpenSUSE. If you are in love with Red Hat, the obvious solution is to try Fedora. When Red Hat split into two distros -- community and enterprise -- they named their community distribution Fedora and the enterprise version Red Hat Enterprise Linux.

GREAT! OSX could quite possibly be the best os i have ever used, good to know that you like it too.
Funny you should mention Fedora, i have actually downloaded the entire thing and it doesnt work lol. (the kernal requires a x86-64 CPU), this has never mattered till now!
Ill try the i386 version.
