Hey Buddy! You can have as many partitions that you want really, just use a disk partitioning program like cfdisk or fdisk. As for the size of the partition it does depend on how big your hard drive is in the first place. Obviously you need the space you need for the os and space for downloads etc. If your dual booting id say half of the space to be honest but thats just what id do. How big is your hard drive??? Kind Regards

I noticed you asked above if Linux and Windows can use the same data partition, the answer is NO. While Linux can access and write to a Windows partition, they can't both use the same partition. When installing Linux, you'd need two partitions. First a root (/) partition, which can be either ext2 or ext3. Second is the SWAP partition. As a rule, you should make the SWAP partition twice the size of your physical RAM. If you wish to use your external drive for storing data, you can make it FAT or NTFS. Both Windows and Linux will be able to write to it and access it. Cheers!

Maybe i missunderstood the question lol. I thought data partition or data storage was needed solely to store your downloads, music etc. Apologies, but hey if you do need a data drive you now know that vfat works :P Kind Regards
