Yesterday's translation and service release of the K Desktop Environment (KDE) 3.5.7 incorporates bugfixes for KAddressBook, KOrganizer, and KAlarm. This release also provides added functionality for KMail in terms of IMAP support, and many other improvements and fixes.

KMail users will be happy to note that the email client can now manage IMAP quota, and copying and moving all folders via IMAP. KMail, the email component of KDE"s Kontact Personal Information Management (PIM) suite, has also received some interface tweaks.

KDE 3.5.7 also includes a number of bugfixes in the Edutainment and Games packages, and also for the Kopete instant messenger. Kopete also received "a major performance improvement on chat rendering."

Release 3.5.7 also incorporates improvements to the KHTML and KJS engines. The KDE press release highlights an "interesting usability feature in KHTML," whereby the mouse pointer now indicates when a live link wants to open a new window.

KPDF now shows tooltips when you hover over links and displays complex PDF documents more correctly. The Umbrello UML Modeller is now capable of generating and exporting C# code, and incorporates Java 5 generics support.

Developers will see several improvements to KDevelop which received a major upgrade, to version 3.4.1. This release incorporates "improved Code Completion and Navigation, a more reliable debugger interface, Qt4 support and better Ruby and KDE4 development support," according to KDE's press release.

The KDE 3.5.7 Changelog includes a detailed list of improvements since the 3.5.6 maintenance release on January 25, 2007. The KDE project notes that most Linux distros and Unix flavors do not integrate new KDE releases until their next release.

However, packages are available for Kubuntu, Arch Linux, Debian unstable, Mandriva, and openSUSE and SUSE Linux.

Earlier this month, KDE shipped the initial alpha release of version 4.0, which is targeted for final release in late October. See the current release schedule for details.
