This lousy thumbnail frame choice issue exists on most of the video hosting services. However, the thumbnail is normally the exact same frame or frames of every video uploaded. If you upload a frame-clock video (one successive number per frame), its thumbnail will identify that exact frame for you. With that, you will have total control of your thumbnails, and can actually inject a single (labeled cover picture or whatever you like) frame at that point. Some video hosts such as hidebehind.com use multiple frames for their thumbnails which enables you to have flashing/animated thumbnails.

Someone uploaded a thirty second frame clock video to Hidebehind.com for this specific purpose. You can download then re-upload it to Blip.tv (be warned! It was made with soft-core porn pictures). Link below. If that bothers you then you can remake a clock of your own.
