Microsoft seeks law to retroactively ban Finnish immigration

In his latest attempt to quell the Linux uprising, Microsoft mastermind Bill Gates has pledged over $2,500,000.00 to George Bush's 2004 election campaign if he passes a law that bans anyone born in Finland from working in the United States, and condemns all existing Finnish natives living in the US to Guantanamo Bay, Cuba's Camp X-ray, where they are to be collectively punished for the un-American ways of one unidentified resident Finn.

A Finnish citizen working in the U.S., who we will call "Linut" to preserve his anonymity, says he does not believe this effort is directed at him.

"I'm just here having fun working on my pet project," said Linut in a telephone interview earlier today from his office at the Open Source Development Lab.

Gates says his efforts will help maintain the purity of yesterday's software industry. "The software industry is finished with these scandalous Scandinavians," he told a business audience in Seattle last Friday. Gates continued, "They are destroying the very fabric of American life - profits, theft, abuse, and slander!" which was greeted with thunderous applause from the audience of more than a dozen executives.

George Bush, for his part, said that the banning of all Finns from the United States was an excellent and patriotic idea worthy of little study and quick, thoughtless execution. At least, that's what we think he said.

France's Jaques Chirac reacted this afternoon, saying that this effort would be a boost to his country's software industry, but suggested that the banning of all Finns from the United States would require a United Nations Security Council resolution before it could be carried out.

Finnish Prime Minister Matti Vanhanen's office released a statement last night that all Finland's remaining software contracts with Microsoft would be cancelled if this effort went through.

President Bush has ordered the Microsoft Windows-operated USS Yorktown to the North Sea to await further instructions.

Microsoft's Steve Ballmer has been dispatched to Finland to offer inexpensive software deals to the Finnish government.

Linut, meanwhile, says he is not un-American. "It used to be illegal to profiteer in the United States," he said, "who is the criminal?"

Fact or fiction?

Obviously, this smells like fiction... but, these days, who can tell?

I wouldn't put it past either Gates or Bush to pull something like this.

And you'll disbelieve any thing bad. There are reminders to all Americans that they need to watch what they say, watch what they do, and this is not a time for remarks like that; there never is. Oh, is it tit for tat now? Too bad you couldn't come up with something more creative. Besides, I have my own problems with the Bush administration, but at least I haven't stooped to name-calling, especially in a top-level comment.

By the way, you might want to read the Salon article a little more closely. It has some rather pointed words for you.

To criticize (call names, create satire, etc) is at the heart of political dissension.

The next thing you'll be saying is that the founding fathers were the most civil people in the world, they never did anything illegal and never called anyone names!

Of course, one of the primary acts of patriotism that we talk about them committing was vandalizing a corporate freighter and tossing it's cargo overboard. Not that I disagree with that, it was a good gesture of civil disobedience. However, compared to that, I wouldn't exactly call name-calling "stooping". It's called protected political speech, bub - live with it or shut the hell up.

Point taken, but you might consider getting a username. Or not, it's your choice; just don't be surprised when people confuse you with someone else.

To criticize (call names, create satire, etc) is at the heart of political dissension.

It's one thing to criticize based on facts, quite another to call names. It's the difference between ad rem and ad hominem arguments.

The next thing you'll be saying is that the founding fathers were the most civil people in the world, they never did anything illegal and never called anyone names!

I have said, and will say no such things. I know that the Founding Fathers were contentious, loud-mouthed, stubborn hell-raisers. Anything less and we would still be British colonies.

Of course, one of the primary acts of patriotism that we talk about them committing was vandalizing a corporate freighter and tossing it's cargo overboard. Not that I disagree with that, it was a good gesture of civil disobedience.

I agree with you unreservedly.

However, compared to that, I wouldn't exactly call name-calling "stooping". It's called protected political speech, bub - live with it or shut the hell up.

Isn't that contradicting yourself? You claim the right to state your disagreement with me. I have that same right, but nowhere on this board have I told anyone to "shut the hell up," nor will I. Free speech for everybody, or for nobody.

Bush hasn't told a truth since he learned to talk coherently (about a year ago)... If it'd be up to him, this whole world be one big war-mongering microsoft product to sell for a license at the "great-american-mall" and anyone who would speak against over even fantasise about any form of open source would be quarantined indefinitely at Guantanamo Bay.

Re:ah yes, another one

Another one? Another what?

I mean, even besides this being labelled as humor and the end of the story being fake as hell, the prospect of Gates paying Bush the lesser for a favor and the prospect of Bush accepting a bribe for a favor are, well, matters of public record at this point.

Perhaps the reason that some of us can believe anything bad about Bush the lesser is because he is a truly corrupt individual surrounded by other truly corrupt individuals.

If you can't see this for what it is... all I have to say is open your eyes! Look around you and see what is going on. It's not like you have to look far to see what they're doing.

No actually we didn't. We voted for Al Gore who won the popular vote and the election, but were screwed by Bush's brother Jeb and by the crooked Ms. Harris.

So NO we didn't vote for him and we sure as hell didn't "ask" for this. This election was hyjacked by the corrupt Republicans in Florida.

History is going to be very unkind to what happened in the previous election.

Re:ah yes, another one

Posted by: Anonymous Coward on August 25, 2003 12:20 PM
Actually, I dont think Bush is corruptible.

I think he is naive and stupid, but for this reason he is very unlikely to be corruptible.
He tends to see the world in black & white and therefor he surely thinks of corruptions as "bad".
Therefor he'll never let himself accept any bribe.

Said that, he IS surrounded by powerplayers whom he trusts and who are able to make him do whatever they want. And I would be supprised if none of these guys are corruptible.

So, if you want to bribe Bush, forget it, bribe his advisors instead.

Disclaimer : I have no evidence whatsoever for above psychological analysis, but usually i'm pretty good at judging characters.

I think it's come time to light a fire under their ass and make bacon...

Let's make a list, shall we:

George W. Bush
Dick Cheney
Karl Rove
Donald Rumsfeld
John Ashcroft
William Gates III
Darl McBride
Chris Sontag
Ransom Love (who, if people remember, was the true founder of Caldera's... err... I mean "SCO"'s current anti-GNU/Linux behavior)

This list will grow to include more of these fascists as their crimes against humanity are exposed. I'm quite certain I've left quite a few of them out.

These fascists should be publicly exposed for what they are, and the masses should learn to act in the faith of the masses, and not this follower-style neo-conservative lapdog fly-a-flag-and-you're-instantly-a-patriot crap.

Open Your Eyes...

Posted by: Anonymous Coward on August 25, 2003 11:09 AM
Smell the coffee.

M$ Winblows and Office sales have run into a brick wall. China and India are working to staunch the flow of their money to a giant blood-sucking US corporation, and the rest of the world isn't far behind. That's why M$ is busy looking for new ways to ream users in the US by forcing them to buy intrinsically valueless upgrades.

They've also pretty much pissed in the well here in the US - fewer competive ideas are reaching market because so many know M$ will kill off anything remotely threatening. The vitality and creativity native to the US is being strangled.

Expect the rest of the world to catch up to the US in software technology (and they won't be contributing to M$'s code pile) before enough people wake up from our M$-induced coma to do anything about it. Only count on item #3 for a few more years.

Re item #4, events of the past couple of weeks have placed Linux well ahead of ALL versions of Windows as far as security goes.

Sorry to wake you up.

Linus in California

If Linus had stayed in Finland, he probably wouldn't have come up with the "smoking crack" line to describe SCO executives. Instead, it probably would've been something like "Executives at the SCO Group seem to be mixing milk with their watery beer". So this has been a broadening experience for him.

no the finnish equivalent would be something along lines of sniffing glue or eating mushrooms(these are generally attributed to going bonkers on substance abuse, or bad trip)..

he certainly wouldn't said 'mixing milk with their watery beer'<nobr> <wbr></nobr>;) maybe 'they bought some bad russian vodka' or something.

hmm.. btw. 'pirihuora' is 'crackwhore' in finnish. (pronounced something like pi-ri huo-ra).

Unfortuately, the Libertarians aren't prominent enough to take power. So we got the lesser of the evils. (And I do mean "evils"!)

Re:Actually, I'm thankful!

Posted by: Anonymous Coward on August 26, 2003 11:30 AM
Yeah, I'm not a big fan of Gore, but I'm not sure that getting the guy who thinks throwing enough money, guns and people at any given problem will solve it, to run your country is really better. Anyone found binny laden yet? (Or a weapon of mass destruction anywhere in the middle east apart from in israel's arsenal?). Can't say I'm much of a fan of terrorism, but I'm also sure as hell not a fan of giving terrorism any more media time than it already gets, nor of creating martyrs (and certainly not of using the threat of terrorism to issue draconian curtailments of civil liberties). Fundamentalism is like the mythical hydra - shoot off a head and another two will pop up. I'd suggest just leaving your guns at home and figuring out some other kind of way of killing the damn thing - poison its food, perhaps.

And yeah, I'll conceed that last point of yours. Our own august leader, jonny howard, has unfortuantly recently decided it would be a good idea to take a leaf out of little bush's book by sticking his nose into the affairs of a few south pacific nations. If this trend keeps up in a few years every country'll be making policy decisions for another one. I wonder who'll get the questionable privilage of interfering with the US' internal policies? The new 52nd state (Iraq) perhaps?

>Next time, go get pissed *after* voting<nobr> <wbr></nobr>:->

We did vote -- we just were ignored.

Bush lost the popular vote --AND-- the electoral collage.

That point was lost with all the attention "the media" gave the FLorida "hanging chad" ballots... some 2,000 votes.

The bigger scandal were the 7,000+ mail-in votes from the US Military... which SOMEHOW got through the Postal system withour getting postmarked at all. Usually when something is not postmarked, it is LOST not delivered... and never 7,000 at a time.

This was not an election; it was a bloodless coup. Once "the media" was taken out of the hands of "liberals" and put into the hands of Global Media, it all became too easy to manufacture consent.

of liberals doing the liberal thing.

I doubt you will post this you certainly will not allow a differing opinion.

Bush was elected by the people and chosen by God
to lead the greatest nation in the world in a holy
war on three fronts.
1 - The enemies of our country both foreign and domestic.
2 - The unholy blasphemic islamic faith.
3 - Against the evildoers and sinners of the world.

After reading this fantasy I realize that
I will not be trying Linux after all.
I would rather pay $500 for Windows than have Linux for free because these left-wingers
are dangerous for our country and will not stop
until they see Kofi Annon as the president.

I agree with your statements about the president. I do not, however, agree with your statements about Microsoft and Linux. Not only is Microsoft (and Bill Gates) one of the most selfish companies (and person) ever to be in business, but the cheat to win people over to their Operating System. Linux creator Linus Torvalds is a good man, and Finnish people have nothing against us, unless we start talking trash to them. If it wasn't for Bill Gates, Finland and the United States could go on as they have been. I blame all of this on Microsoft and SCO.

...even Gates's cluelessness is shown by the fact that they state Finland to be in Scandinavia (it's not).

HEh you twat!

I live in Sweden and as far as i have been thaught since 1rst grade Finland is part of scandinavia. Look it up you stupid imbecill. Only an american can be as lost as you. I love Jay Leno's "Man on the street" where americans express incredible stupidity, live on tv. Only a stupid country with even worse population than in 1930 germany can elect such a monkey as Bush.

You're wrong. It's the "Nordic Countries" thet Finland is part of.

Well, as a Finn in Finland I have to say that there is no right answer to the question is Finland part of the Scandinavian countries or not. Every book you read tells you differently. Geographically Finland is not part of Scandinavia, only Sweden and Norway are, but if you also include Denmark, maybe then you can include Finland too, who knows...

Actually Finland really isnt geologically a part of Scandinavia. As you can read from the link if you know finnish.Scadinavia is the peninsula of Sweden and Norway. When you add Finland to it thats called Fennoskandia, but usually everyone just calls it Scandinavia anyway<nobr> <wbr></nobr>:/
