Del.icio.us bookmarks extension for Firefox

Organizing your favorite Web sites with bookmarks on Firefox can be tedious, especially when you want to keep your bookmarks synchronized across several computers at the same time. That's why I started using del.icio.us, the social bookmarking service now owned by Yahoo! Besides allowing me to access my bookmarks from any computer at any time, del.icio.us does a great job on keeping my bookmarks organized with tags instead of folders, and I can easily share my favorite Web sites with my friends.

Yahoo! recently released a del.icio.us bookmarks extension for Firefox that fully integrates del.icio.us with Firefox bookmarks. As with any Firefox extension, installation is straightforward: just click on the Install Now button on its home page. After restarting Firefox you'll be greeted by a pop-up window that asks for your del.icio.us account login information and whether you want your bookmarks to be imported to del.icio.us. Although I imported the Firefox bookmarks on three different systems without problems, I suggest backing up your profile -- $HOME/.mozilla on Linux -- first, just in case. If you want to switch back to the default Firefox bookmarks, just uninstall the extension.

I've had some synchronization problems with earlier versions of the extension, but the current version 1.3.51 is pretty stable. The only serious problem I've found is that it synchronized only the tags, not the bookmarks, on my desktop system, which had the same Firefox profile I have on my laptop (I had copied the .mozilla directory over). After creating a new profile, this problem was gone.

Del.icio.us bookmarks conflicts with Google Browser Sync and Foxmarks, and will prompt to disable them during the installation. Foxmarks offers similar functionality to del.icio.us but lacks the "socializing" part; it stores your bookmarks and allows you to synchronize them across several different systems and browse them online but you can't share your bookmarks with other people. You can find more information about Foxmarks on this FAQ.

Google Browser Sync is a different story. It's more like a Firefox profile synchronization tool; besides the bookmarks, it stores your browser's settings, saved passwords, cookies, and history on your Google account and allows you to synchronize them across your computers. I use different settings for Firefox on each of my systems and I prefer to memorize my passwords instead of saving them, so this extension doesn't really work for me. I've also grown fond of organizing my bookmarks with tags instead of folders, a feature that neither Foxmarks nor Google Browser Sync have.

While Foxmarks and Google Browser Sync are both nice additions to Firefox, I still prefer del.icio.us over them. The del.icio.us bookmarks extension can improve your Web browsing experience, but it needs some getting used to. If you prefer to keep your Firefox bookmarks and use del.icio.us at the same time, you can try the "classic" del.icio.us extension instead.

Hmm, useless?

I never understood what is so good about del.icio.us.
I don't have so many bookmarks, most URL's I can remember myself in the head. I have a few bookmarks though on my computer, but I've never felt the need to access them from another computer.

I don't need publish my bookmarks on the Internet, I don't see the point why I would want todo that. If I want give a friend an URL in my bookmark, I just send it to him, I don't need give him all my URL's. And what my bookmarks is, is my business and its private.

I don't understand what is good about del.icio.us, I think its useless. I use the Adblock and NoScript extension for Firefox. !View Source Chart" is pretty okay extension too.

I never understood why other people might have another opinion than me.
I don't have so many opinions, most opinions I can keep for myself in the head. I have a few opinions though on my computer, but I've never felt the need to post them for another reader.

I don't need to publish my opinions on the Internet, I don't see the point why I would want todo that. If I want to give a friend an opinion from my head, I just say it to him, I don't need give him all my opinions. And what my opinions is, is my business and its private.

I don't understand what is good about other opinions, I think its useless. I vote for Bush and for the war in Iraq. Iran/Korea is pretty okay war too.

Still not as well integrated as in Flock

... but the new del.icio.us extension was enough to bring me back to the Firefox fold. I had been using Flock on Linux and Windows since the first preview.

del.icio.us integration is THE best thing that ever happened to me for syncing my bookmarks between home and work. A process that used to involve exporting my 'marks, emailing the html file, and importing<nobr> <wbr></nobr>... then nixing the duplicates.

If you don't have so many bookmarks that you can remember them all, good for you. You obviously don't use the internet for research of any kind. As for the sharing part, you CAN make all your bookmarks private<nobr> <wbr></nobr>... the choice to share them is made with each and every site you tag. But some folks are just a bit paranoid about everything they do online. Whatever works for ya<nobr> <wbr></nobr>... and the new del.icio.us extension certainly works well for me!
