I just so a forum post on how to create a new Linux distro for one's familly and friends. I think it's greate to be able to tailored GNU/Linux to one's need, but I also think that nowadays, we are often confronted to too much of this... or too many of that, and we end up in a deadlocks [when making no choice is the best option].
There's a brilliant explanation of this phenomena by Barry Schwartz. Here's a link to access the video on Google because embedding doesn't seem to work here...

In order to check if the Ubuntu Netbook remix would be suitable for my wife parents I set myself to test it on a Virtual Machine or on laptop (which is running Karmic since Alpha one).
I started at http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download-netbook. There isn't an iso available to download, but an img file. This isn't surprising as the targeted hardwares (in many cases) have flash memory instead of hard drives. The image file is designed for Atom processors as they dominate the market (damn it).

I'll be flying out next week to China to visit my in-laws and have them meet our daughter. We'll be in the country, in QiDong Shi, Hunan.
And I'm taking a couple of USB sticks with me (1 and 8GB), loaded to boot Ubuntu Jaunty 64-bit and 32-bit.

This week I had the pleasure of running a Webex session directly from my Ubuntu Desktop.
It was the first time I didn't have to hop into a VM via rdesktop in order to connect. The webex client uses Java and was working fine, untill I tried to resize the screen (that failed miserably and gave me a very nastily distorted view).
