NEWB's adventures in Linux From Scratch

This is an effort to inform those interested of what it will take a newbie to accomplish the goal of building an LFS system. I will document all of my work in this blog mistakes and well as triumphs.

Hello again,

I've done it, successfully built LFS. It was a major accomplishment for me. I'm proud of it. Now the question is where to go from here?. I could continue the build add users and X . I have a much more important goal as I was so overcome by errors and mistakes that I don't feel I've learned as much as I should have. Now there is not as much pressure to complete. I can gracefully move along and read man pages of programs I'm installing so I'll have a better understanding of what I've got.

Hello,

I'm back and I've got an update. I tried to reboot and failed so , I backed up my Crunchbang menu.lst to menu.old and reinstalled grub to the MBR.  Then reinstalled the kernel. I decided to boot to a prompt rather than edit grub menu.lst again. booted and got  Error : file not found  OK... now what do I do?  Well , I erased everything after the kernel arguement except for the forward slash / and hit tab........... it seems I don't need /boot just lfskernel.....  so I try to boot again and get "Warning" failed to open initial console , failed to execute /bin/bb   I tried Google and got the "root" arguement is wrong. Redid the root=to the real root instead of  boot partition and it booted !!!

 Boy,

I've actually gotten  to the end of the build, They point out that their are a few programs I'll probably need if I wish to build BLFS.

 Back again,

Working hard at it today. As you know if you're following along. I just started over.  Since I had all the temp tools already built, I extracted them into the tools directory in /mnt/lfs...........oops.... I saved this tarball as /mnt/lfs now I've got /mnt/lfs/mnt/lfs/tools ..LOL .  rm -rvf to the rescue :)  cd to / and try again. Ok now it's right. I extracted with tar -xvpjf as this was a bz2 file. Not knowing where to start exactly , I want to avoid yet another mishap so I 'm going back to installing partitions and as I breeze thru I remember that I have to chown a+wt $LFS/sources.  I've already copied my backup of the sources to $LFS/sources. I make sure that I've got everything right echo $LFS.  Then make a link between tools and root on the cd I think  ln -s  $LFS/tools /

Hello again,

This would be funny if I were intending to humor the readers of this blog.  Seems I go from one fiasco to another.  Not to disappoint, :)   My latest attempt ends in yet another failure.   I got as far as "/sbin/udevstart" in chapter 8 . Before I got my latest failure,  I was following the stop resume txt  listed in the readme from the cd and it called for that command to resume the build but I didn't have a file called "sbin/udevstart". Now that file according to the README is in regards to older versions of LFS so I'm not really sure if I'm supposed to have udevstart in this version of LFS. I googled it and in older versions they found the install of Udev omitted the install of udevstart. I did both find and locate and couldn't see anything other than udevd in my file system. So just to see if that was it I ran udevd start at the command prompt "already running" so I continued to resume and then tried to run kernel config and got another error when trying to run "make menuconfig" Anyways I believe that somehow I've messed up yet again....  I 'm not sure if it's to do with "strip" command in the last chapter or if I resumed wrong?  so I figure well I backed up my system so I retreive the tarball and guess what?.... this newbie screwed up yet again!!!!!!. dammit man..... I backed up just the "tools" dir... I have the base backed up already this tarball is no good, was supposed to be the entire /mnt/lfs/ directory  NOT :(  I'm not sure which I'm starting to look more like at this point ? moe, larry, or curly??? :)

Well,

I'm not sure if I've done anything wrong or if I just "stripped" the code I built. but somehow I've messed things up again. Seems "Murphy" was hiding just around the corner waiting on me LOL.   Plus  accuracy is obviously no a strong suit of mine. I should have backed up /mnt/lfs or "/" when I backed up the last time and I only backed up tools.... DUH.    Not all is lost as I have backed up the tools directory prior to messing things up this time so I don't have to start all the way from the beginning. :)
