system: debian squeeze
desktop: gnome
sometimes, the X crashes unexpected
the only message i found in /var/log/messages:
bonobo-activation-server (atree-5955): could not associate with desktop session: Failed to connect to socket /tmp/dbus-Hgw94KLmAd

And that in /var/log/Xorg.0.log
your video card?
NVIDIA?
Try to instal the stable(or older) version of drivers on yours video card!

There's always the video card manufacturer binaries.
I've used those in the past to see what options they use and how they are configured in the xorg.conf file. Then using that update / correct the one that keeps erroring out.

Assuming xorg.conf is your prob - have you tried generating a temporary xorg.conf and testing X with it?
X -configure
X -config /root/xorg.conf.new
or such...

the video card i use is intel:
Intel Corporation Mobile 945GM/GMS/940GML Express Integrated Graphics Controller
the xorg.conf i have used near two years, from etch to squeeze, mm, i think as friends here said , after the system upgrade , it may have something problem, i will try to generate a new one
as this problem happened rarely, i will post my result after this situation happen again

If all else fails copy the xorg.conf from a Ubuntu live CD to your native xorg.conf file in your OS.
It's worked for me countless times.
