I find apt is very easy to use. rpm comes second. I prefer Debian based systems. Mainly Ubuntu. For servers, use Debian. It can be used with or without GUI. And will run your most basic tasks and advanced ones.

Another note, you can use most of the popular programming languages in Linux.
Why do you want to run firefox in the background?
Daemons are system service that are ran in the background servicing the system or waiting requests from other apps. Firefox is a user app that the current user interacts with. It is not considered a daemon so it won't run in the background unless you execute it and minimize it to be used later. Again, it is meant for user access not system service.
Not sure if this will help, but you can run "top" from the command line which will give you active running applications on your system.
Use the "man" command in the command line to get a description of the apps running.
For startes, Linux works great on low-end PCs. In fact, PCs actually run better with a Linux OS installed.
If you want a Linux OS that user friendly and a gui easy to use like winxp, try linux mint 13 or Zorin OS 6. Both are very stable and will allow you to play and watch music and videos.
I recommend Zorin OS 6. Zorin is a Linux OS that has a windows look and feel to it and eye-candy designs. So if you prefer to navigate your PC they way you do in windows, Zorin is perfect. You can even change the deskop Gui to other styles that resembles older or newer versions of windows. This way, you don't have to relearn how to get around your system.
Zorin can even dualboot with your current installed OS easily with no complications. You will love it.
You have a powerful graphics card which will work wonders with Zorin.

Thank you all. I have a 1GB flash and 650MB CD-RW'S I do have a 4GB micro sd card and card readers on both PC's. Can that work???The 1GB and 650mb CD will work. Never tried to boot with sd cards on a laptop. If the bios can see it, then why not.
Use your 1GB usb flash and burn the image to the media and boot your laptop with it. Use the links that I have posted previously.
