It might help if you included the type of monitor along with what video card you're running. Getting an a answer requires a bit more info.

Have you checked to see if your volumes have been turned up after the install? Have you checked your PulseAudio settings to see if the audio is pointing to the correct hardware? The only time I've had problems with sound is when something is not configured correctly.
Log in as root, or use sudo to complete the task. It would also help to see what you did to bring up this error. Showing the error without the command is not going to get you accurate answers.
