$sudo ifconfig
and
#ifconfig

are different. When trying sudo, your PATH variable will not be set as root PATH dir.

logging in as super user is , infact, root isn't it?

The problem you are facing is not bcoz of your old PC and there is no other requirements to post a question/start a topic apart from registering.
