Try Ubuntu Studio (http://ubuntustudio.org/). It is very Good multimedia studio with all ubuntu aplications. You can install it from the existing Ubuntu desktop:
apt-get install ubuntustudio-desktop.

Damn small. If you aren't interested in lots of graphics- try also Finnix.

Ubuntu Studio is my vote. Mandriva- also good
