    Try to start a Terminal. In Gnome:Application->Accessories->Terminal . Then type into your Terminal, if you use sudo: $sudo apt-get install openoffice.org-base In the most case, the distributions doesn't use sudo per default. Then type: $su #apt-get install openoffice.org-base Have a nice day!

But who needs the mac OS Terminal under ubuntu? Ubuntu and all other linux distribution brings his own Terminal. The default Terminal is depends on your Desktop enviroment. Under Gnome: Terminal. Under KDE: Konsole.
