GDM 2.30 and headless erver

Link to this post 14 Feb 11

Hello,

I install a rhel6 based headless server, and I try to avoid the X serveur to load on the console (to spare ressources), with gdm active (I use XDMCP)

On older GDM, I only had to put in /etc/gdm/custom.conf :

[servers]
0=inactive

but it seems it's not anymore supported on 2.30... and no more gdmsetup either !

Can someone give me the trick ?

Thanks

Why bother with changing GDM? Just edit /etc/inittab and set the default runlevel to 3 (multi-user w/ networking but no X server). Then you can either reset your runlevel to 3 with init or telinit, or you can reboot. In any case, when the default runlevel is set to 3 in /etc/inittab, when the system boots it won't start gdm. However, if as a user you want to start an X GUI, then just run startx.
