Wer kennt sie nicht, die Flamewars KDE vs. Gnome, seit Jahren liebevoll gepflegt. Wer KDE liebt mag Gnome meist gar nicht und umgekehrt. Best Flamewar 2009 wird aber ein anderer: KDE3 vs. KDE4.
Warum polarisiert KDE4 so stark, warum wird diese Debatte so emotional geführt? Bei sidux (basiert auf debian unstable) wird KDE4 seit 5 Wochen per dist-upgrade installiert. Im sidux Forum spriessen seitdem die Threads um KDE4 aus dem Boden. Einige davon amüsant bis sehr nervig: Tenor: Ich will mein KDE3 wiederhaben. Egal wie oft ich antworte: KDE3 ist in unstable und sehr bald auch in testing mausetot [RIP] und mit vertretbarem Aufwand nicht zurückzuholen und selbst dann unsupportbar, der nächste Poster will trotzdem KDE3 zurück
Desktopumgebungen scheinen mehr zu sein als sonstiger Code. Ich verstehe Leute die sagen, ihre Arbeitsweise, in Jahren ausgefeilt, sei zum Teufel. Also bedarf es Zeit und Mühe den Workflow wieder herzustellen. Versüsst wird dies aber doch durch ein meiner Meinung nach sehr gefälliges Erscheinungsbild, viele neue Techniken im Hintergrund (akonadi, nepomuk) die zugegebenermaßen ihr Potential erst noch entfalten müssen. Ich freu mich drauf.
Ich kann nicht verstehen dass User behaupten KDE4 sei eine Fehlentwicklung und zum Scheitern verurteilt. Ebensowenig verstehe ich die Behauptung es sei zum produktiven Arbeiten viel zu fehlerhaft. Wäre ich dieser Annahme würde ich mir eine andere Desktopumgebung suchen.
Im Großen und Ganzen bemängele ich dass viel zu viel und auf falschem Niveau gemeckert wird anstatt fleissig Bugreports zu schreiben und gewiss zu sein das KDE4 das beste KDE aller Zeiten wird. In diesem Sinne, bitte lasst uns den richtigen Baum anbellen.
I have used linux and KDE for a long time- from kde1 to kde4- and the changing of the kde-version was never a great thing.
I use different desktop environments respectively window manager like icewm, lxde and kde (icewm and lxde especially for hardware with older processors or with lower RAM). Everybody has the free choice for his "own" DE/GUI/WM without problems- that's a great advantage for linux-users.
But it isn't a good idea, to use older versions of programs.
The time is running and all the time we (the users) get newer programs with newer technologies and functions. It's nessesary for everybody to be flexible enough. Twenty years ago we had to use computers with a very simple "GUI" respectively only a textbased OS like DOS. I like the progress. Without progress many people never had a chance to use a computer. I know, not every change is an improvement, but many of the changes are improvements.
People can get used to something new.
I have some problems with the english language, but I hope, my online-translator (http://www.linguatec.net/onlineservices/pt/site) is good enough ;-).
Auf die Gefahr hin, mich unbeliebt zu machen: ich hoffe ja, das naechste sidux kommt mit KDE4.3.x -
was allerdings eine "kleine" Verzoegerung im Releaseplan bedingen wuerde :)
I do not like KDE at all, I've tried to use it but this DE is not for me. But I like Sidux very much and I think my dream distro is something like Crunchbang lite but on base of Sidux. So it would be great to have possibility in future releases to choose components to install like it realized in Debian. Anyway thanks a lot to Sidux team for best Debian based distro.

I too was taken aback by the appearance of KDE4 so suddenly and so raw and unpolished after a nice, mature if unexciting 3.5. Still, some time ago I learned that to live with sid is to live with change...if you can't deal with it, you need another distribution. Mostly with sidux it has been very smooth sailing, with only occasional glitches and I can't really complain...otherwise it is an incredible distro, technically so far above the crowd that nothing else is remotely acceptable. I am hanging on with gritted teeth, waiting for KDE4 to mature into its potential but getting to know fluxbox and xfce and liking them better than the glitzy new entry. I am also freezing my main working partitions pre-change until I get happy with the new stuff.
I get a definite feeling of defensive attitude on the part of the sidux team on this issue and I can understand that they feel under siege with all the acrimony that seems to be directed their way. Unfortunate because by charter and function, they have to follow sid...it isn't their fight...but they also have the experience and maturity to understand that things will get better. I hope the masses of u$oft refugees will restrain themselves from the nastiness and realize that they are not entitled to anything by birthright here...it is free and it is AS IS.
Auch ich muss sagen, dass ich anfangs entsetzt war, als ich KDE 4.0 gesehen habe....okay hübsch war es auch damals schon....aber ich fand es absolut unbrauchbar zum arbeiten. Dazu lief es bei mir alles andere als stabil. Aus diesem Grund bin ich auch zu Gnome umgestiegen. Dies hat sich allerdings spätestens seit KDE 4.2 geändert. Nun liebe es KDE4 und möchte es nicht mehr missen.
Dank KDE4 wird auch Windows7 endlich einen vernünftigen Desktop bekommen, ich freue mich darauf. -.-
Ich gehöre auch zu den "Kritikern", habe KDE4 von Anfang an mit Argwohn betrachtet.
Aber KDE3 hat auch mies angefangen, und nun lieben es die Leute. Also warte ich mal ab.
Bis dann gibt es für mich ja die einfache, aber solide Fluxbox.
LXDE wird auch immer kompletter, und - man fasst es nicht - vermutlich gibt's sogar e17 noch bevor KDE4 "fertig" wird :-)
Ich bin aber zuversichtlich, dass beim nächsten sidux Release ein zumindest benutzbares KDE4 dabei ist, und werde daher die sidux-KDE4 FULL installieren, Bugs jagen und weniger nörgeln.
Naja, über den letzten Punkt denk ich noch nach :-)
