Here we have quite an interesting talk. The text (maybe 10k) could have been put on a web page, and it would have taken seconds to download it, and a couple of minutes to read.

Instead, we have a 62MB video of Edward Cherlin sitting at a desk and speaking the text and answering questions. Listening to him takes many times longer than reading the text would have taken. Where is the added value in the 62 megabyte video over 10k of text? Is the assumption that most people under the age of 30 can't read?

As far as I am concerned, the video of the talking head is *much* *less* *valuable* than the text (which obviously exists because there is nothing spontaneous about Cherlin's talk) because it would consume much more of my time than reading the text.

So somebody has SUBTRACTED value by presenting a huge video. I don't have time to watch videos.

Although it may look like he was reading text, that was a perfectly spontaneous monologue. I wish that I could have asked more questions, but Edward knew what he wanted to say. The only text to this interview is the text that has not yet been transcribed.

Why hasn't it been transcribed? Are you justifying wasting 30 minutes of the time of tens of thousands of people - total cost to humanity, several person-years - by saying that the organizers of this event couldn't spare a couple of hours to transcribe it?

I do not believe that the monologue was "perfectly spontaneous". The fact that he was not reading directly from a text does not mean that the monologue was unprepared.

While clearly an intelligent individual, his speaking style put me right to sleep. I would of hated to have this guy as a teacher. Also, is it just me or was he all over the map. It started off about OLPC (kind of), then some hippie sounding anti-government thing, then something about word processing. He might of starting talking about OLPC again, I couldn't keep up, my eyelids were to heavy at that point.

Wake me when the bell rings.

You should make sure you get enough sleep, then work on your attention span. I found his style clear.

You guys are a bunch of assholes. I never watched the video, but I won't pretend I care about his speaking style, either. If you don't like the article, then close the window and kill yourself.
