Knoppix 5.1.1: Now with eye candy

The new year has brought a new release of the Knoppix live CD. Along with the usual updates to application software, the most noticeable change in version 5.1.1 is the inclusion of the Beryl 3-D desktop with the Emerald theming engine.

Since support for Beryl is still experimental, the 3-D desktop is provided in Knoppix as an option. To enable it, you have to use the knoppix desktop=beryl cheat code on boot. Considering the current status of Beryl, the new 3-D desktop works surprisingly well; it starts without any problems on a lowly Acer TravelMate 243 laptop with an Intel 82855 GM integrated graphics controller, and it feels snappy and is a joy to use. While some may consider the inclusion of Beryl in Knoppix a gimmick, it provides a great introduction to the whole 3-D desktop idea. Installing Beryl can be a tricky and time-consuming business, so the ability to try the fancy 3-D desktop with zero effort is a boon for all users looking for some Linux eye candy.

As usual, most software packages have also been updated. Knoppix 5.1.1 comes with KDE 3.5.5, GNOME 2.14 (available in the Knoppix DVD edition only), and OpenOffice.org 2.1. Following the recent Mozilla/Debian controversy, the Firefox browser and the Thunderbird email client have been replaced in Knoppix 5.1.1 with Iceweasel and Icedove respectively. Among useful software additions is the mkbootdev script, which allows you to create a bootable USB stick -- a handy tool for making a USB version of Knoppix. Of course, the most important software news in Knoppix 5.1.1 is without a doubt the inclusion of the latest Frozen Bubble game, which now supports multi-player network games.

Knoppix 5.1.1 also features a number of significant changes under the hood. The UnionFS file system has been replaced with aufs (Another UnionFS). According to the changelog, aufs is a more streamlined implementation of UnionFS that fixes many bugs still found in the original file system. The latest version of Knoppix comes with the NTFS-3G driver that offers full read/write operations on NTFS partitions. This makes Knoppix an even better tool for troubleshooting Windows-based machines.

As always, the new version of Knoppix comes in CD and DVD editions, which are available for download from mirrors listed at the Knoppix Web site. All in all, this release continues the fine tradition of delivering solid updates to the already great live CD Linux distro.

Ridiculous Fanboy!

You Ubuntu freaks are getting to be as bad as the Gentoo fanboys! And like Gentoo before, you freaks are going to give Ubuntu a black eye.

The article was about Knoppix! There was no point whatsoever in mentioning Ubuntu and the Beryl tie-in that you used as a segue was largely irrelevant too!

STFU!!!

"You Ubuntu freaks are getting to be as bad as the Gentoo fanboys! And like Gentoo before, you freaks are going to give Ubuntu a black eye."

Fuck you! The Anti-Ubuntu people who are jealous are really getting old, like a bunch of grandma goats who never shut the fuck up. Ubuntu is popular for a reason. I love the Knoppix Live-CD and I recommend it as well as the use of Knoppix, but I also recommend Ubuntu. Any comments here about Ubuntu are well deserved since members of the Ubuntu community have worked hard to keep Beryl going with mirrors and more.

No, he's right

You're missing the point.

This article is about Knoppix, not Ubuntu. By bringing Ubuntu into every topic, whether or not it's relevant, you've giving the Ubuntu community the reputation of being a pushy bunch of fanatics. This is something that turns most people off.

Let me give you an example. Imagine I'm a real estate agent. If you talk about your new baby's blue coat, I ignore the baby and mention that there's a beautiful new house near the blue sea. You mention that you're wondering where you're going to find the money for your baby to go to university, and I mention a property near Harvard. You get the idea? How long would you keep speaking with me if I kept on this way?

If you must bring Ubuntu into a Knoppix (or other distro) discussion, at least make sure your comments are directly relevant to Knoppix (and not just an excuse to talk about Ubuntu).

For instance, "I'm glad that Knoppix is including Beryl in the distro, just like Ubuntu is planning to in Feisty. It's just just what the Linux desktop needs to lure Windows away. Does anyone know when Beryl will become the default for Knoppix instead of being a boot switch? Is NVidia supported or will it have to wait for the Noveau drivers?"

Imagine how much faster this install would be if you built it from source using Gentoo though! Portage 0wnz

Actually, I found the comment interesting and probably useful. It's not like were swimming in too many comments, so there's no need for censorship. Are you the notorious formerly Newsforge-based Debian troll?

I've rolled back to 5.0.1. Either its just me or 5.1.1 is missing the FUSE module.

Beryl

I found a shell script on the net for my sid system and it worked wonderfully. I got it to autoload by putting a symlink in my kde autostart directory. Seamonkey started crashing while on my gmail page so bye-bye beryl. I thought all that eye candy was goofy anyhow.

Too bad I don't have a faster 'net connection (168Kbps here), or I'd be downloading that image in a heartbeat.

AiGLX and beryl on Edgy

Posted by: Administrator on January 19, 2007 12:12 AM
Beryl is very easy to setup on Ubuntu Edgy, it just involves adding some lines to xorg.conf and installing beryl and your away! Yes it does run well considering it is still in the alpha stage.

yet another reason why it's hard for me to move to Linux

Posted by: Anonymous [ip: 68.143.203.130] on February 07, 2008 01:46 PM
all these distro zealots bashing each other. Can't we all just get along? I mean there are several distros I've tried and i like them all in their own rights but i keep having problems with different issues so until i can install a distro and get EVERYTHING to work out of the box, I'll just keep bouncing around distros and dual booting with XP. My biggest problem and it seems to be everywhere is the sound in firefox. I haven't found a distro yet that can get that right including Ubuntu and Knoppix. Thanks everyone for all the headaches and arguments but what us noobs need is HELP not arguments.

I have been using knoppix on an old PIII 800 mhz computer for about a year
i did the knoppix-installer and dist-upgrade stuff and with a few mods to my
sources list i have full debian with anything debianable installed on it.

It beats my 1.7g celeron with XP on it all day and night and the coolest thing
is when KDE crashed cause i opened up a thousand things at once, my
services were untouched when the GUI rebooted...
