Not really a myth, just not feasible from an engineering viewpoint. Requires large, very expensive solar panel. Also helps to be in Phoenix, like my brother. He has a solar roof on his back porch. It cost him $15k, supplies about 1/3 the power his house uses in the winter, without air conditioning. It will pay off in 15-20 years.

Every hydrocarbon-based energy source we have today can be traced back to stellar nuclear reaction: oil, coal, wind, and even peat bogs (if those are actually used any more). The sun's energy makes all those possible. Only the natural breeder reactor in Gabon created a non-solar-origin power source on Earth.
