Hai Conan,
I am Arul here just want to share my ideas with you..It may helpful to pick a right one ithink.
From your post, i know you are going to buy a new NoteBook PC..
Your choice is Toshiba some model. Right...
But i have not yet used... Friend of mine is using Toshiba which does not support linux fully
I’ve a new laptop, an HP dv6799ep (dv6700 series special edition). The reason I choose this was the 4GB of RAM and the Intel 9300 (dual core, 2.5GHz, FSB 800MHz and 6MB cache) which is a great combination to creep up with Linux.

The weak point with this laptop is the graphics card.

Try this to....

I am actually going to suggest that you check out any Linux laptop vendors that might be available to you (I don't know which country you live in). I've installed Linux successfully on a variety of Toshiba, Sony and ASUS laptops (among the better known manufacturers), but I prefer to buy my laptops with Linux pre-loaded. A couple of my favourite vendors are SWT and Emperor Linux, though I also don't know your price range.

I usually install and re-install different distributions on the machines after I've purchased them, knowing that somehow, you can get Linux to run properly on them.

Take the red pill

I am a fan of IBM/Lenovo Thinkpads. I have 2 in the house that run Linux extremely well. One of them served as a dual boot with xp until I realized I didn't need it any more. Now it just runs sidux.

Dittos on the Lenovo. I bought a Thinkpad for my wife and replaced the XP with Ubuntu 7.1. It has never had any issues except having to log in to the keyring every time she comes out of hibernation. I would definitely recommend the Lenovo for Linux.

Dell is turning around and has some attention from Linux community.
2 Years ago bought Dell Laptop and wanted Linux and they were indignant, wouldn't do it . Oh well, bought it with "State of The Art" Winxp then out of the box Partition the drive 50/50 and installed SuSe 10.1 . That SuSe 10.1 is a dream for configuration, so had no problems with detecting, configuring hardware. Understand that Ver:10.3 is even better.

Want to have some power and fun. Format the Hard Drive for Fat32 on Windows side and in Linux you are able to use Windows files, to use those files as if you were in windows with just a click of a mouse.

One important point to remember, Do not use Windows to do the partition and, When purchase of a computer INSIST on a copy of ALL the Software that comes with . I had to remind Dell but they eventually sent me all disks for the software that came with the computer. Allways install Win first.
I have extremely good performance with SuSe 10.1 on a 5yr old Dell and this Newer Dell laptop also. One last point..Suse Linux is highly respected for their hardware+software configuration tools that makes it easer on any computer.

I am running ubuntu 8.10 on my acer aspire 5630, the only problems i have is, sometimes my built in web cam isn't recognized by cheese and when it is the video quality is very lame, but when i load up the pre installed Vista the view is amazing. Also when i try to set up my dual monitors with my old NEC AccuSync 70 monitor and my laptop monitor it will only clone the output and not stretch the desktop. Vista has no problem stretching the desktop so i know it can be done i just can't get ubuntu to do it. Other then those two complaints everything else works swimmingly.

Hi, Josh. Please start a separate thread for your question -- those who might have the answer are never going to find it buried deep within an unrelated thread, and it's considered bad forum etiquette to hijack someone else's question.

Thanks, and I'm sure you'll get good help for your issue when you post it in its own thread. Best of luck,
Nate

Now I'm no Poe, but I think he was stating his machine's make and model and the snags he encountered with it and Ubuntu, for conan1989's reference...
