Subject: First Time Kubuntu Install

Hi, today, for the first time, I am installing a Linux distribution, Kubuntu 8.04 KDE 4.0. I am installing it onto an old lap top, to see how it works. I pressed to install, and the screen goes black for a long time, nearly hour now. Being new to this, it seems not right to me, but I do not know. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

I do not want to go to Vista, if I can avoid it. I have been thinking about Linux and all its flavours, and not sure which to try and whether I am able to run some Microsoft products in Linux. I have MSOFFICE, I use this all the time. I have some other software that I use, and not seen a Linux version of it, and finally, games... I use Lineage 2, and I certainly want to play this too.

Any help, would be greatly appreciated.

5 Views and no replies...not very conducive to enticing people to want to install and use Linux and leave behind Microsoft.

Hi evoid,
Did you get a Kubuntu install screen, with a menu or list of options, before the screen went blank? Obviously, the installation is not working, so just remove the CD. But it could be your hardware, or a bad CD. What model is your machine, and how did you burn the CD?

if you'd post the specs of the laptop... but like ahaau said, perhaps even KDE is too much for an old laptop, I concur with Xubuntu but I wouldn't recommend ubuntu.
you could try other XFCE based distros, or take this little test (http://www.zegeniestudios.net/ldc/), it's a little old but still holds true.
head on over to distrowatch.com too and have a look see all around but I advice not to get real small distros like Puppy of DSL, well Puppy is easy enough on the eyes but these babies are realy for portability and not so userfriendly-yet
