Ubuntu Requirements
700 MHz or better processor
3GB of available disk space
256MB of memory (RAM)
CD-ROM drive
Ethernet interface
VGA graphics interface

Processor doesnt meet requirements

LFS will work, slax (a mini distro of slackware) will work

perhaps an XFCE based distro or *gulp* fluxbux.
problem with fluxbux is that it doesn't have that regular icon filled environment.

sabayon has a fluxbux environment, Xubuntu for XFCE.

I've been able to get Ubuntu 8.04 with compiz and avant working on a very similar setup. It was a bit slow but doable; I'd still suggest xubuntu though.

Damn Small Linux was made for that hardware.

DSL is okay, but its size hinders regular desktop users too much IMO. Puppy is a little more doable but still mleh...
I haven't tested yet, but there's also a mini edition to PCLinuxOS...

Ubuntu may run on your system but it may seem a bit slow, you could try other distributions with a lighter window manager, like Damn Small Linux, Puppy Linux. I personally use Mandriva a lot, you can use it with KDE or GNOME just like Ubuntu and if you feel it too slow you can switch to Icewm keeping more or less the same looks and menus

Good luck

Thats only a problem for some people. Truthfully, I can't stand normal desktops with icons on them. :)

yeah, you can get around once you know what you're doing, but the first time I ran flux on sabayon i thought it hung on me as it didn't really do anything that caught my attention the flux was up and running.

other users might also want to have at least a decent panel...
