Can someone please tell me.... is an Athlon AMD64 considered an i586 or i686?

I understand that, in regards to the installation, that this is critical.

I am running SMEserver software on an MSI 6702VMS motherboard with an Athlon AMD64 processor 3200+ and I need to run the rescue software from the installation. I am given an option of either i586 rescue, or, SMEi586 Rescue.
Can someone tell me what decides this?

As well, when I download the .iso, it only gives me the i386 version. Will this run on an AMD64?

thank you in advance,

Will

The Athlon AMD64 is an i686. It has the same architecture as the Pentium Core Duo.
And yes, the i386 iso will run perfectly on the AMD64.

Which distribution are you downloading that gives you a 32-bit iso only? There are some annoyances, particularly with regards to multimedia, with 64-bit versions. But, what you plan to use your computer for should dictate whether you go with a 32-bit or 64-bit install on an AMD64. If you plan to do any heavy computing or numerical programming, then the 64-bit version is definitely the way to go.

Take the red pill

Thank you for the replies, I have downloaded the 7.3 version and, it seems wherever I go to download, there is only the i386 version. Is there a newer version?
When my server starts to boot it gives me this:
Booting SME Server (2.6.9-67.0.7.EL)

Below are the links for the SME Server wiki and forums and the documentation. The 7.3 is the latest version and apparently they only provide i386 downloads. But you should be able to use that.

To use the rescue feature, put in the the installation disk and at the boot prompt type:
sme rescue

Thanks again Shashank Sharma. I will go with this.
In closing, I have had very bad connections with wiki.contribs.org. Their pages take a long time to load and, in most cases I have to close the browser and re-enter the site a few times before I finally get to where I want to go. My question is: Do you experience the same problems? Thank you again... Will

Will, happy to help. And no, I don't have any problems visiting the contribs website. It loads pretty fast for me.

Cheers!
