Subject: Unable to Install - Broken Package

Hi All,
when installing MySQL (not included in Gusty) for some reason I felt the need to install mysql-connector-odbc
This was downloaded but failed to install correctly. Ubuntu Gusty on as 32-bit Dell

Now, whenever I use dkpg (with any of the options), synaptic, dselect or whatever they all fail with a message that the mysql-connector-odbc package cannot be found (there isn't one as far as I know), or that mysql-connector-odbc is danaged and the install/update (of any other packages as well) cannot proceed until it has been reinstalled and configured.

I've been down this road before and finished up with a corrupt OS.

Is there any way to get rid of this package/program with some other tool - none of the usual suspects work. I can't do anything until it is gone!

Thanks in advance.

Richard

Try using the command apt-get remove on the broken package.

If that doesn't work, have a look at:

for more suggestions about what to do to restore your system.

Yes, use apt-get remove <package>. Also, run apt-get update.

Hmm - deep joy! It still insists on trying to re-install the duff package, which came as a (can't remember the name, sorry) and had to be "aliened".

I'll have another read of the link given and a ponder.

Thanks

Right. I've gone through the ideas in the link - nothing ! Surely there must be a way of just saying that I simply don't want this dammed package, please delete it (without it insisting on trying to install it first)?

As this is a work machine, re-installing the OS is a very major task (as in just what would I back up), and as this is the second time in three months that packaging has failed I'm pretty pee'd off.

Is there really no package for mysql-connector-odbc anywhere, other than at MySQL via "alien", which has caused all the trouble in the first place?

Cheers

And you've tried all the apt-get options, including remove, clean, and check?

I have indeed! Is there a list of the files that apt uses to decide which packages to install, it looks like the only way out is to force, somehow, apt to abandon trying to install a package I no longer want. There must be a way, surely? This is really peeing me off, I have other packages I desperately need to install for work.

Beamends, take a look at these (use the man pages?):
apt.conf and apt-config

Beamends,
You said you had to convert the package with alien? In that case, I'm assuming that you installed it with dpkg, instead of with apt-get -- is that correct?
Or, to get right to it: where exactly did you get the troublesome package?

Thanks,
Nate

I'm having an issue with apt right now, I am unable to do anything because of a broken package. I can't figure out how to remove the broken package. Can anyone help?

Matt, include more information, such as the package name and your installation procedure, and post it to a new entry so that others will see it.
