I hate to say it but in the end most of them are pretty similar and can all accomplish what you are looking for. The big hitters right now are:

openSUSE
Fedora
Ubuntu
PCLinuxOS

I would say it is all trial and error at first. Test drive a few and see one you like. I have been using openSUSE for a few weeks now (was previously running other desktops) and have been happy with it.

Almost all the distros. have very easy to use software repositories. Yum and apt, on Fedora/Red Hat and Ubuntu (an relatives) are my favourites. Literally for thousands of software packages, installation can be as easy as
yum install <package name>
or
apt-get install <package name>
