Subject: Ubuntu 8.04: printing to Windows network printer share

Hello. I've got this Ubuntu 8.04 box in a lab filled with Windows XP and Mac computers. I joined the Ubuntu box to Active Directory using the Likewise program, which seems to work great. Now I'm working on getting printing set up so the Ubuntu box can print to the Windows network printing share.

I tried using the default add printer tool in Ubuntu (the smb section of it), but it doesn't seem to be able to recognize the share. I use the same server and share info that works fine on all the Windows and Mac machines. Ubuntu has the correct drivers for the printer (an HP 4300), but can't verify the existence of the share or send a print job to it. (I can ping the print server from command-line).

I was wondering if there might be another tool I could install that could do the job. (Maybe even scan AD for printers -- the printer is published.)

I tried posting this in the Ubuntu forums, but their forums are so busy that it didn't last two hours before being buried by other questions.

Does the printer have an IP address? And, are you running Gnome or KDE?

I tried substituting the IP address for the FQDN, but it didn't seem to make a difference.

It running Gnome. Is there a KDE tool that would work better?

I tried to do this also and was having problems. the only difference was I was running ubuntu 8.04 on both computers. All I did was went into the printing tool mentioned and chose internet printing protocol. Then I went to the printing computer and when into it's printing gui and told it to share and allow connections from other computers. then I went back to my laptop and typed in the printing computer's ip address "192.168.1.141" which will be different for you and you can find by opening terminal and typing ifconfig. Once that is typed in correctly click find queue and select your printer. Then apply and all should be fine. On a windows box it's different and i never tried. hopes this helps someone.

I was able to get connected to the printer. I believe I was originally using the wrong FQDN, and also needed to provide domain credentials.

This has led to another major problem, but perhaps I'll put that in another thread...
