Subject: no sound in kubuntu 7.10

Hi all,

I'm new to kubuntu, and i quite like it, but I have a huge problem. I can't get any sound out of my laptop.
My laptop is an Acer 6920g.
This is the output of both lspci and lsmod:

In Gutsy their was a bug report with the intel sound Audio controller in your pc. There is a bugfix link and a step by step command posting to fix it in the bug link. Here:

This is the section in the bugfix that shows how to get sound. I would read through the whole thread though to get a better understanding of how everything turns out cuz I didn't read the whole thing.

Instructions that work for me:

sudo apt-get install alsa-source
cd /usr/src/
sudo tar xvjf alsa-driver.tar.bz2
cd modules/alsa-driver/
sudo ./configure --with-kernel=/usr/src/linux-headers-$(uname -r) --with-cards=hda-intel --with-oss=yes
cd alsa-kernel
sudo patch -p1 ... # repeat with all three patches
cd ..
sudo make
sudo make install

Now either reboot or reload all sound modules:

killall mixer_applet2 && sudo modprobe -r snd-hda-intel
sudo rmmod snd-seq-dummy snd-seq-oss snd-seq-midi snd-pcm-oss
sudo rmmod snd-mixer-oss snd-pcm snd-hwdep snd-rawmidi snd-seq-midi-event
sudo rmmod snd-page-alloc snd-seq
sudo rmmod snd-timer snd-seq-device
sudo rmmod snd
sudo rmmod soundcore
sudo depmod -a
sudo modprobe snd-hda-intel

Finally, use alsamixer to unmute the headphones & internal speakers, and set
PCM volume to something louder than 0%.

If you notice they are saying to use alsa instead of oss. Try right clicking your speaker icon and open properties and change your speaker selection menu from oss to alsa. Use the intel alsa mixer.

I don't realy understand how to install the patch. Where do I find "alsa-driver.tar.bz2"? I do need it to install the patch, right?

This afternoon, I descovered somthing strange. I touched the volume control of the cinedash panel on my acer laptop, and a volume bar appears on the screen, saying the volume is on 11%. In the sound settings screen, all sounds were set to 100%. (11% is the maximum volume. At that point, the cinedash panel's volume meter is full.)

Burts, right click the icon and hit preferences and on the left will be a list like" Master,Cd, line in, etc......." Click on Master and select Intel 82801CA-1CH3 (Alsa Mixer) If Ubuntu 7.10 has it available. I don't know if it does because I use Ubuntu 8.04 kernel 2.6.21. Is your computer on this list?

I used kubuntu 7.10, but i reinstalled ubuntu this afternoon, and updated to 8.04, but still no sound.
If I right-click on the speaker icon, and choose preferences, "HDA Intel (Alsa Mixer)" is already selected.

My laptop is not in the list u posted.

Their are other options other than hda for alsa. I used Intel 82801CA-1CH3 (Alsa Mixer) from the provided list to get the sound on mine working. That is my selection for master,CD,Line in etc..... Try the other options one at a time and reboot and see if your sound starts working.
