#5 Kunal P.Bharati 2010-01-19 14:26 Minimal install CD contains more packages, driver s,gui desktops/tools which are usefull for general desktop user.

Server CD is for installing a server system. It contains less tools no guis and is not for general desktop users.

#4 Tom Anderson 2010-01-13 19:52 The minimal install disk only contains the minimum number of files required. In other words, it is only 5-20 MB! For example, the minimal install for 9.10 is only 12.1 MB. The required packages that are not provided on the disk must then be downloaded from the Internet during the installation, but in fact, downloading the fresh files may end up faster than updating the old packages from a LiveCD.

You can download an iso for a minimal install disk from https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/MinimalCD

There are also some kernel tweeks that make the server CD install better for servers than desktops.

You can use iver but I would always say use the most apropate:-

Server for Server
Desktop for…
Mobile
Gaming
Media

+4 #-2 Chip Gerber 2009-04-26 19:31 The minimal install from the Alternate CD comes with more drivers and features that may appeal to an experienced linux user. It allows for a more flexible installation. It also allows you to install Ubuntu to a system that lacks the ram required to run the Live CD because it is a text mode installer. But the Alternate and Live CD are both geared towards ultimately ending up with a GUI.

The Server CD is geared towards ultimately ending up with a CLI. Also Unlike the Alternate CD, the Server CD comes with the functionality to choose some popular pre-configured servers to install.
