There r several causes for sound stopped.... It could be that another program is hogging the sound card. Or if u tried USB sound adapter any more ! The distro version is required, although u may try running mplayer ( or xine, or whatever) from a terminal so can see any errors that occur. If possible try re-install the sound card.
