  • Yes, Linux can be installed on a new hard drive. Just boot the install media (cd or usb stick) and go through the steps; partitiong and formating will be done during the install, so there's no need to take care of that beforehand.

  • A clean hard drive is actually a great way to start things off, just boot the disc of whichever Linux distro you want to use, and install it. Most distros will partition the disc correctly automatically for during the install process, and starting off with a clean slate makes thing a lot simpler.
