How would I update my Ubuntu Linux version 8.04?

I own a 9'' Dell laptop with Ubuntu Linux version 8.04. I would like to update it to at least the 10.32, and several attempts at doing so have failed. I'm open to any suggestions. Yes, my OS is old, and yes, my screen is tiny. Also, would updating erase my files/pictures/saved documents? I'm rather sure it's not the LTS version.     You can not upgrade your OS through another download: you have to create another live disk and install from that. The Ubuntu website will give you great instructions for the live disk if you need it.

  • Is it a new Dell Laptop with old release of Ubuntu!! If it is new one, better contact to vendor where from u purchased this and ask them for help.

    2nd way,(if it is an old laptop) the easiest way is to back up ur all personal data and do a clean install. If u tried with Update Manager, it may be lead to a mess.
